Citation

1.Brigadier Rajinder Singh, MVC (Posthumous) was born on 14 Jan 1889. In Bagoona village. 35 Kms East of Jammu city in Samba city in Samba Tehsil. He was Commissioned on 14 Jun 1921, In the J&K Armed Forces. Rajinder Singh rose to the rank of Brigadier in May 1942 and become the Chief of Staff of the J&K forces on 25 Sep 1947.

2.In Oct 1947, a large force of tribals from Pakistan’s North-West Frontier, led by retired Pakistan Army Officers, veterans of Second World War, simultaneously intruded into western Jammu and Jhelum valley, with Srinagar as their objective. This operation was nicknamed ‘Gulmarg’. At this stage, nothing stood betweenPakistan and its objectiveexcept a few assorted companies of State J&K, State Army under Brigadier Rajinder Singh Chief of Staff of State Forces. Brigadier Rajinder Singh and his men were hopelessly outnumbered on all fronts, by bold and detetermind delaying actions between Uri and Baramulla, they managed to delay the advance of Pakistan invaders along the Jhelum valley road.

3.Brig Rajinder Singh and his force also succeeded in destroying vital road bridge at Uri, thus completely upsetting the timetable of the Pakistan sponsored tribal force. This delay enabled the Maharaja Hari Singh to carry out negotiations with the Indian union for accession and moving India Army to save the state.

4.Brigadier Rajinder Singh was ambushed on the night 26/27 Oct 1947, barely six hours before the Indian Army landed at Srinagar airport. Demonization of Uri bridge was a master stroke that ultimately saved Kashmir, for this action Brigadier Rajinder Singh gratefully known as ‘Saviour of Kashmir’ and was awarded independent Indis’s first gallantry award ‘The Mahavir Chakra’ (Posthumously).
